In this era of mega grocery stores, when food is routinely shipped around the globe, it’s easy for us to become disconnected from the source of our own nourishment. I want my children to learn the importance of supporting local farmers and develop a lasting appreciation for the land that helps sustain us. In “Blueberry Season,” I documented our experiences at a blueberry farm in Pine Mountain, GA, where my children could see blueberries growing and pick their own fruit. This is a reflection of how I grew up in Virginia, spending my summer days roaming freely on a farm, with no access to TV or radio until I went home in the evening. I want to instill this sense of history and tradition in my family.
